Citizen Judgment Calls Impaired. Great Evidence for Need to Reform Education

Posted on September 26, 2010

One of the reforms that would have taken more time to implement and an even longer time  to calculate results would have been education reform.  It should have been a priority.

It is obvious today that the stupid human tricks we see in the press highlighted as comedy are the result of people falling through the cracks of the education system.  These poor souls have either not been discovered to have difficulties that could have been helped if in school or are utilizing reason in a way that suggests they have been poorly schooled so that rational thought processes could grow and flourish in them.

One such incident that is very funny but that had serious implications was the recent foiled robbery at a WalMart that caused the perpetrator to seek refuge in a garbage dumpster behind the store.  Sad to report, the trash company truck picked up the bin and emptied it into the truck.  The driver utilized the trash compacting equipment on the truck twice and then drove off.  Here’s how it went down:

Emergency operators also took a 911 call from a frantic Brienzo, begging them to find the truck. ‘I’m in the back of a trash truck that keeps compacting me!’ Brienzo said as dispatchers urged him to calm down.

Police say Brienzo was literally being compacted along with between six and eight tons of rubbish mostly discarded cardboard.

As Stark County Emergency Management [in Alliance, Ohio] officials used the signal from Brienzo’s mobile phone to locate where he was, police were frantically searching Alliance for the truck.

During a 16-minute conversation, Brienzo told dispatchers he thought he was dying. ‘I’m dying man,’ he said, complaining his bones were being crushed, saying he knew he wouldn’t walk again and screaming at the top of his lungs each time the truck driver picked up another load and compacted what was in the truck.

He is heard telling dispatchers at one point that he didn’t care what happened to him, he just wanted to live.

Here is the outcome:

Saved: Even though it meant capture by the police, the flattened miscreant was glad to be rescued

And there you have it.  The stupidity of one desperate, no doubt unemployed citizen causing him to think and act rashly and to have his story picked up by the wire services and appear in newspapers all over the world.  The above piece is from a British paper.

Only a good education system that shepherds young people through its doors for education and review of their general health can save the future of America.  If we don’t develop skilled and highly trained workers, we will lose the global competition for manufacture and services that will bring us up to where we were just after World War II – a thriving nation.

Thomas Jefferson on education:

“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.” (as cited in Padover, 1939, p. 89)

“. . . whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own government; that, whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them right.” (as cited in Padover, 1939, p. 88)

The above quotes were the cornerstones of Jefferson’s interest in education and the franchise. He placed education as the foundation of democracy and a prerequisite to vote.
