Stephen Hawking Says Heaven is a Fairy Story. Hell Too, SH?

Posted on May 19, 2011

Debilitated by a chronic disease and blessed with a massive mind, Stephen Hawking has had a lot of time to sit and think.  Does his own life on the edge influence how he views death?  Has he somehow skewed the evidence in a negative direction?  He is a scientist and he believes in the truth of its methods and outcomes.  In all his many calculations the answer he finds is that the idea of heaven has come to us as just another “fairy story.”  He claims that it is for the benefit of those afraid of death and the dark.

Although he is a scientist, he has to start from a thesis and a thesis formed by a man suffering a chronic illness may just be different from one formed by a young, hale youth who thinks he will live forever.  And if heaven does not exist, does  hell?
